When you are on Facebook, how often do you share other’s posts? Daily? Several times a day? Me too. This widens our audience and increases awareness of our organization. The page is also a good place to recognize our members, advocate for health care issues we are passionate about, support and create collaborations with other health care organizations, and promote any charities we partner with. A Facebook group allows easy communication among the members via wall posts, messages, chat, and even shared documents. Events are easy to promote within a group as well. The group offers members a place to discuss district meet ups, promote networking, provides a forum for committees to ask the membership for input, a space to share job openings, and a sounding board for members to ask for and offer advice. Group members receive notifications when there is activity in the group and each member has control of how often they receive group notifications. The group is also great for sending a mass message to membership.

So, What’s the Difference and Why Do We Need Both? The main differences between a Facebook GROUP and a Facebook PAGE are; pages are public whereas groups can be public or private, and the main purpose for the PAGE is to attract new members whereas the GROUP exists to support current members. The reason to have both gives you the best of both worlds; the Facebook page allows MHCEA to create an authentic online representation of our organization and to promote our events and education offerings, and encourage people to join our organization by posting photos, sharing links, promoting educational opportunities, etc. Essentially, the page is where we build up our fan base, keep our followers updated, drive traffic to the website, and how people connect and follow our organization. People who ‘like’ our page, will see page updates in their News Feed each time we post something on our page. What a great way to bring a positive message to our members and nonmembers alike!

What’s the Goal for Utilizing Facebook? Expectation is that by increasing the number of followers we have on our Facebook page, as well as a better awareness of who we are and what we have to offer, we can increase our membership and community contribution. The hope is that by fostering a MHCEA Facebook group where we can engage our current members, together, we can create a community of inspiration and positive collaboration.

Be sure to let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

What’s a Facebook PAGE and How Do Our Members Use It?
